The basic premise of the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests (GMRT), 2nd Canadian Edition, is that it is useful for teachers and schools to know the general level of reading achievement of students throughout their entire school careers. The objective information obtained from the tests complements teacher's personal evaluations and provides a solid basis for:

• Selecting students for further individual diagnosis and special instruction
• Planning instructional emphases
• Locating students who are ready to work with more advanced materials
• Deciding which levels of instructional materials to use with new students
