Woodcock-Munoz Language Survey Revised (2005)

CATEGORIES: Ability, Achievement

AUTHORS: Richard W. Woodcock, F. Munoz-Sandoval

RANGE: 2.0 years to Adult

SCORES: Standard Scores, Age PR, Grade PR, RPI, CALP levels, W-scores.

SUMMARY

The Woodcock-Muņoz Language Survey Revised (WMLS-R) includes a quick and easy-to-administer screener (four tests), and a more-comprehensive 7-test battery, both designed to measure language proficiency of English language learners (e.g., ESL students). The seven tests that comprise the WMLS-R measure the critical areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Testing times range from approx. 25 minutes (screener) to 55 minutes (complete battery).

The WMLS-R tests, described in the chart below, are primarily measures of language skills that are predictive of success in situations characterized by cognitive-academic language proficiency (CALP) requirements. The content of each test was selected to represent important skills needed for language proficiency for a diverse population, covering a broad range of development (2 years to Adult).  Four of the tests are carried over from the WMLS Normative Update (2001), and these tests have all-new items in the WMLS-R.

Reading

Administration of selected WMLS-R tests contributes to the related cluster scores, as outlined in the following selective testing table.  Cluster scores provide the primary basis for interpretation.  The examiner chooses which tests to administer for each examinee, depending on the cluster scores that are desired.

Selective Testing Table

The WMLS-R offers two parallel Forms in English, Form A and Form B.  The use of both forms supports pre-testing and post-testing within a relatively short interval, while ensuring that the student does not see the pre-test questions again during the post-test.

In addition to the scores, the WMLS-R also helps to gather qualitative information with a Language Exposure Questionnaire, a Language Use Questionnaire, and a Test Session Observations Checklist.

Uses of the WMLS-R

  • Assess the level of English language proficiency (ELP)
  • Measure cognitive-academic language proficiency (CALP)
  • Determine eligibility for ESL services
  • Plan instructional programs
  • Monitor progress
  • Evaluate program effectiveness
  • Perform research studies

Norms

The WMLS-R provides normative information based on more than 8,800 individuals, in over 100 geographically diverse communities, obtained during the standardization of the WJ III.
